How Is Cracked or Loose Tile Repaired?
Tile repair is fixing or replacing damaged tile and grout without redoing the whole surface. The damaged tile is cut out and a matching tile is set in fresh thinset.
- Find why the tile failed. The tap test and the causes below show whether the problem is the tile or what sits under it.
- Cut out the grout around it. A precise cut with a grout saw or an oscillating tool frees the tile, while tape protects its neighbors.
- Break out the tile without chipping its neighbors. It is broken from the middle outward, never pried up from an edge that touches a sound tile.
- Scrape the bed flat. The old thinset comes down, so the new tile sits level with the rest.
- Set the matching tile with full thinset coverage. A dry floor needs at least 80 percent coverage and a shower 95 percent (ANSI A108.5). Tiles over 15 inches are back-buttered.
- Grout, and seal if the grout is cement. Cement grout is sealed once it cures, while epoxy grout needs no sealing.
Can one tile be replaced without damaging the rest? Yes, when the grout is cut out first with a grout saw or oscillating tool. The neighbors are protected with tape.
A repair follows the same standards as all the Central Pennsylvania tile installation we do.
Why Do Tiles Crack or Come Loose?
Tiles crack or come loose for five reasons, and most of them sit under the tile. A repair that ignores the cause fails again.
Each cause leaves its own sign, and each needs its own fix.
- Subfloor flex. A floor that bends more than the TCNA deflection limit cracks tile. That limit is commonly L/360 for ceramic and porcelain and L/720 for natural stone.
- Hollow spots. Thin or patchy thinset leaves voids, and a tapped tile over one sounds hollow. A floor needs at least 80 percent mortar coverage, and a shower 95 (ANSI A108.5).
- Missing movement joints. Tile pushed tight against the walls, with no soft joint, can tent or pop up. TCNA EJ171 puts a movement joint at the perimeter and at every change of plane.
- Impact. A dropped pan or tool cracks the tile it lands on, while the rest of the floor stays sound.
- Settling or slab cracks. A crack that runs across several tiles follows a crack in the slab. Under new tile, a crack isolation membrane tested to ANSI A118.12 goes over slab cracks.
The tap test finds hollow tiles before they crack. Tap a coin or a screwdriver handle across the floor, and listen for a dull sound. TileHub (2026) finds water damage behind old tile common in houses built before 1980. A crack that runs across several tiles tends to come back through new tile laid over it. The floor below is still moving. Tile tenting, where tiles lift and peak at the joints, typically costs $120 to $500 to repair nationally (HomeGuide, 2025).
The lasting fix for a flexing floor lies in how the tile floor installation was done in the first place.
Can a Chipped Tile Be Fixed Without Replacing It?
Yes; a small chip can be filled with a color-matched epoxy or porcelain repair filler and polished flush. A chip deep enough to show the body of the tile, or a crack through it, means the tile is replaced.
For a small chip, the repair takes four steps.
- Clean and dry the chip.
- Mix the filler to the glaze color.
- Fill the chip slightly proud and let the filler cure.
- Level it with a razor blade and buff it smooth.
A hairline crack can be filled in place with clear two-part epoxy (Bob Vila, 2025). Tile paint and a clear sealer then hide and protect the repair. The epoxy is firm in about 30 minutes, but the tile should take no weight for 24 hours. A tile with a missing piece, a shattered face or a large crack is replaced instead. Bob Vila (2025) puts a hairline repair at about 2 hours in total and $10 to $40 in materials, nationally. RUBI (2026) notes that cracks and holes can be fixed in a few hours. A repair that is not allowed to dry can work loose. DIY tile repair kits typically cost $10 to $30 nationally (HomeGuide, 2025). A professional chip or hole repair runs $50 to $400, by the same national HomeGuide figures (2025).
How Do You Match Old or Discontinued Tile?
Old tile is matched from leftover boxes first, then by its name and shade lot. A discontinued tile is taken from a hidden spot, such as inside a closet or under an appliance.
The search runs in four steps, in this order.
- Check the leftover boxes. Spare tiles kept from the original job are the closest match there is.
- Find the name and shade lot. Tile from a different production lot can differ in shade, so the lot number printed on the box matters.
- Take a tile from a hidden spot. A closet floor or the space under an appliance can give up a tile for the visible spot.
- Make it a deliberate accent. When no match exists, a planned border or accent looks better than a near match.
Choose the grout color with the new tile in hand, not from a chart. Marble, travertine and other natural stone are sealed after the repair, on the sealer maker's schedule, as in any luxury stone bath. Ordering 10 to 15 percent extra when tile is first installed leaves spares from the same lot for later repairs (TileHub, 2026).
Should You Repair the Tile or Replace the Whole Floor?
You should repair a few damaged tiles when the rest are sound and the subfloor is solid. Replace the floor when many tiles are hollow or cracked, the subfloor flexes, or water has reached the layers below. A planned remodel is the other time to replace rather than repair.
The table below sets the two choices side by side.
| Choice | When it fits | What it means for the job |
|---|---|---|
| Repair | A few cracked, chipped or loose tiles on a sound, stiff floor | The damaged tiles and their grout are replaced, typically $130 to $500 per cracked tile nationally (HomeGuide, 2025) |
| Replace | Many hollow or cracked tiles, a flexing subfloor, or water below | The old floor comes up, typically $2 to $7 per square foot to remove nationally (RUBI and TileHub, 2026), and the floor is rebuilt |
Loose or tented tiles are replaced rather than glued back down, so water cannot get under them. Between the two choices sits a full regrout, for tiles that are sound when only the grout is failing. Sound, flat old tile that is well bonded can sometimes take new tile over it instead of coming out. When a floor is replaced, porcelain is the most durable of the common tiles to put down. When the whole floor has to go, our guide on how to remove tile explains what the removal involves.
What Does Shower Tile Repair Involve?
Loose or cracked shower tile often means water is getting behind it. The waterproofing is checked before any tile is replaced.
If the membrane or the pan has failed, a tile repair will not hold, and the shower is rebuilt instead. Soft grout, dark grout lines, a hollow-sounding wall and a stain on the ceiling below are the signs of water behind tile. Nationally, replacing a few shower tiles typically runs $150 to $500 (HomeGuide, 2025). Fixing water damage behind the tile runs $1,500 to $2,000 nationally, and replacing a tile shower pan $900 to $3,500 (HomeGuide, 2025). A full shower retile runs $800 to $3,000, by the same national HomeGuide figures (2025). A shower regrout and reseal runs $100 to $700 nationally (HomeGuide, 2025). When the shower needs rebuilding, it becomes a custom tile shower installation on a new, waterproofed pan.
What Does Tile Repair Cost?
Nationally, a typical tile repair costs $232 to $474 (Homewyse, September 2026), far less than a new floor. HomeGuide gives $130 to $500 per cracked tile, nationally (2025).
Many tile repair contractors charge a $100 to $300 minimum service fee, even for one crack, by HomeGuide's national figures (2025). Grout repair runs $100 to $700 nationally, by the same HomeGuide figures (2025). Per square foot, HomeGuide puts tile repair at $10 to $50 nationally, depending on the tile (2025). We quote after seeing the damage.
Three things set the price of a repair.
- How many tiles. One cracked tile is a small job, while a row of hollow tiles points to a bigger one.
- Whether matching tile is on hand. Leftover boxes save the search for a match.
- What caused it. A repair that also fixes the cause, such as a flexing subfloor, costs more than a swap.

What customers say
Absolutely amazing job!!!! My bathroom was a rather large project but these guys did fantastic. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
Eddie did am amazing job! He came in (on moving day) and installed a beautiful kitchen backsplash for me. He was kind, respectful, and hardworking. He built trust immediately, and that was a big deal to me as a momma with two kiddos. His attention to detail in his work was clear, and he ensured the tiles in the corners lined up perfectly. I am not hard to please, but I was excited and grateful for the tedious work he endured to make my kitchen look amazing. Thanks, Eddie. 10/10, would recommend.

What Else Do Homeowners Ask About Tile Repair?
Homeowners ask whether cracked grout is a warning sign and whether new grout matches the old. Two more are whether a cracked tile is a hazard and how soon a repair can be used.
Is Cracked Grout a Sign of a Bigger Problem?
Yes, when the cracks run along a whole row or around loose tiles, because that points to movement or water below. A single cracked line is usually just old grout, and regrouting fixes it. The full method is on our page on grout repair and regrouting.
Can a Repair Match the Old Grout Color?
Yes, closely; a repair can match the old grout when the new grout is chosen for the aged color, not the original. Where the difference still shows, regrouting the whole wall or floor gives one even color.
Is a Cracked Tile a Hazard?
Yes; cracked edges cut bare feet easily, and a crack in a shower or entry lets water under the tile. Cover a sharp crack with tape until it is repaired.
How Soon Can a Repaired Tile Be Used?
A repaired tile can take light foot traffic after about 24 hours, once the thinset and grout have set. A shower waits for the full grout cure time the maker gives, commonly about 72 hours. Epoxy grout needs 24 to 48 hours to dry (RUBI, 2026). Until then, wash a repaired tile only with gentle soap and water.
